Management Flashes from “Between the Hashes”

by Mike O'Neill

This Sunday, either the New England Patriots or the Los Angeles Rams will compete for the honor of raising the Vince Lombardi Trophy as Super Bowl LIII Champions.

100+ million will watch it on TV. Odds are good that you will be one of them.

Yes, a team has to be good to make it to the Super Bowl. But what does it take to win it all?

Might the same requirements apply to Companies as well?

Business guru, Jim Collins found that companies become great, not because they have the best products or the best ideas…they become great because they have the best leadership. He found that successful companies:

  • Build leadership teams to meet company objectives
  • Reduce variance & improve managerial performance
  • Identify & leverage the leadership talents that already exist in their companies.

Collins recommends:

When in doubt, don’t hire – keep looking. It’s better to wait and get someone that you know is a good fit.

When you know you need to make a people change – Act. Once you realize you need to fire someone, don’t put it off. Do it quickly & fairly…but do it. Letting the wrong person hang around is unfair to all the right people, who often find themselves compensating for the wrong people’s inadequacies.

Give good people good opportunities, rather than the biggest problems. The right people don’t need to be tightly managed or fired up; they will be self-motivated by the inner desire to produce the best results and be part of creating something great. Give your employees the opportunity to shine and the flexibility to exercise their skills and talent.

Finally, Leadership in these companies maintain balance in their lives. They have a life outside their jobs. They enjoy their families. They relax.

Let me encourage you to do the same and… Enjoy The Game!
